There is a familiar sort of Primary 6 student who knows the science, talks about it fluently at the dinner table, and then loses fifteen marks in the open-ended booklet. The content is not the problem. The problem is that the paper does not test what a child knows so much as whether they can produce it in the form the marker is looking for, under time, in writing. Experimental Reasoning and Fair Tests

A substantial part of the paper concerns investigations, and this is where careful students often lose marks fastest. Identifying the variable being changed, the one being measured and the several being kept the same is a discipline, not an instinct. Timing and the Two Booklets

Multiple-choice questions need to be moved through briskly to leave room for the writing, and students who agonise over the first booklet routinely run short for the second, where the marks are harder to earn quickly. Timed practice fixes this, but only if it is genuinely timed. Using Past Papers Without Burning Them

Past papers are a limited resource and most families spend them badly, working through the pile early and having nothing fresh for the final revision period. Use topical practice while learning, keep whole papers for later, and treat every completed paper as a diagnostic rather than a score. The value sits entirely in the review: what was lost, why, and what would have earned the mark. A paper marked and filed away has taught nobody anything.

What to Look for in a Programme
